Rough droplet model for spherical metal clusters

چکیده

We study the thermally activated oscillations, or capillary waves, of a neutral metal cluster within the liquid drop model. These deformations correspond to a surface roughness which we characterize by a single parameter ∆. We derive a simple analytic expression determining ∆ as a function of temperature and cluster size. We then estimate the induced effects on shell structure by means of a periodic orbit analysis and compare with recent data for shell energy of sodium clusters in the size range 50 < N < 250. A small surface roughness ∆ ≃ 0.7 Å is seen to give a good account of the decrease of shell structure observed in experiment. Electronic Level Structure of Group Iii Heavy Element Clusters Studied by Photoelectron Spectroscopy

UV-photoelectrons of mass-defined indium and thallium cluster anions have been analyzed at a detachment energy of 3.68eV in the size range n = 2-20. The photoelectron threshold energies are in rough agreement with the values predicted by the metal droplet model. A number of low-lying excited states of the neutral-clusters are detected. The high atomic s-orbital binding energies appear to induce...

Numerical Study of Spherical Vapor Layer Growth Due to Contact of a Hot Object and Water

Vapor film formation and growth due to contact of a hot body and other liquids arise in some industrial applications including nuclear fuel rods, foundry and production of paper. The possibility of a steam explosion remains in most of these cases which could result in injuries and financial damage. Due to the importance of such phenomenon, this study deals with vapor layer forming, growth, and ...

Deposition of Various Shapes Particles on a Rough Surface in Turbulent Flow

An experiment set-up is used to study wall deposition rate of particles on a rough surface in a turbulent channel flow. Deposition velocities for three classes of particles, namely, spherical glass particles, irregular shape polymer particles, and fibrous silicon particles are studied. The particle concentration at the test section was measured with the aid of an isokinetic probe in conjunction...

A Numerical Study on The Solidification of Liquid Metal Droplets Impacting onto a Substrate

The problem of normal incidence impact with solidification of a spherical liquid metal droplet onto a rigid planar substrate is studied. The Navier-Stokes equations are solved using a finite-volume formulation with a fixed grid. The free surface of the droplet is tracked by the volume-of-fluid (VOF) method. The surface tension on the droplet surface is evaluated by a continuum surface force (CS...
